Artist Statement

These thirty-six inch square oil paintings are about secret, sometimes humorous messages, which I discover in the wings of butterflies. As I see nature, I notice a universal language of design. Patterns repeat themselves in large and small scale-- aerial landscapes look like microscopic organisms. Animal markings become natural calligraphy. So many signs seem mysteriously connected to each other and to me. Some of my paintings carry whimsical messages, and others playfully represent nature’s unity. My butterflies are metaphors for spiritual transformation.

Did early man imitate in his mark making, some of the signs he discovered in the wings of butterflies?   Experts have studied the origin of language and the beginnings of the alphabet, but I present my paintings as an alternate conceit.

Through layering, inscribing, scratching, sanding down and painting over, I attempt to imitate time passing. My personal graffiti participates in the signs and secrets I discover, and about which I can only wonder.
